Mesenteric architecture accentuates boundaries of secondary loops. The colors of the cut edges of the mesentery match the color code of the corresponding parts of the intestine. The mesocolon is shown in purple. Ovals: umbilical orifice. Note the central position of the right vitelline vein (7) along the central mesenteric rod. The formation of tertiary loops was associated with a lengthening of the mesenteric leaves (red arrows in panels a1, b1) that define the secondary loops (compare panels b and c).
