Expression of RALDH2 mRNA in embryonic chicken gonads, as assessed by whole mount in situ hybridisation. (A) In both sexes, expression is detectable in both gonads throughout development (e.g, G). There is no significant expression in the mesonephric kidneys (eg. Ms). (B) In males, RALDH2 expression localises to the seminiferous cords. In females, expression becomes localised in the proliferating cortex of the left ovary (arrows) and in the medulla of the right gonad (arrows).
