Longitudinal sections of the 5 day regenerating intestinal rudiment showing (A) Toluidene blue staining (B) collagen immunoreactivity (green) and (C) Meso-1 labeling (red). Nuclei in B & C are stained with DAPI (blue). A and B are the same section while C is a similar section from the same animal. The figures clearly show that the area where the Meso-1 labeled cells are ingressing is devoid of collagen labeling, suggesting that the ingressing cells play a role in the remodeling of the extracellular matrix.
