Branches of the superior mesenteric artery are stable landmarks for the midgut. The most proximal 8 branches originated intra-abdominally and supplied the 1st and 2nd secondary loops. The third branch is typically bifurcated and perfused the intestine in the neck of the umbilical hernia. Distances between the 5 branches that originated extra-abdominally were longer. These branches supplied the 3rd secondary loop. Distally, the SMA formed a vascular “broom” that supplied the 4th secondary loop and cecum. Scale bar unit: μm.
