H-WT, hypertrophic wild type, P-WT, proliferative wild type, R-WT, resting wild type, and aadd, double homozygous mutant for Hoxa9,10,11 and Hoxd9,10,11, are shown. The hypertrophic compartment shows the most divergent gene expression pattern. The aadd mutant most closely resembles the resting wild type compartment of the forming bone, consistent with the histologic comparison
