Expression patterns were classified into 4 groups based upon somite staining: Group 1 (unambiguous differential expression), Group 2 (likely to be differentially-expressed), Group 3 (probably differentially-expressed), and Group 4 (non-staining or no differential expression); Results from the 1–850 candidate range are shown. Genes in the range 176–850, with their respective ranking, are separated by a space and enclosed by square brackets (see Figure 6 and Additional File 8 for whole-mount in situ hybridization images for each gene).
