Death of fra mutant clone cells. Most fra4(A) and fra3(B) mutant eye cells generated during development do not persist through adulthood. The few that survive tend to cluster at the periphery of the adult eye (light-pink w- cells marked by arrowheads in A and B). Elevated levels of cleaved caspase-3 (CC3, red) are observed in fra3mutant clones (circled, GFP-negative) generated in the third instar antennal disc (C). Clones were generated with a hsFLP driver in A and B, and with eyFLP in C and D.
